Walk to School & Active Travel

Why Active Travel?

Children love to be active! Children who are physically active enjoy healthier, happier and more socially connected lives than children who lead less active lives. If active habits are built in childhood people are more likely to grow up to be active adults and have health benefits across their lives. Active travel is a great way for kids to get their recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity.

Ride2School Day 2022

On Friday 25th of March it was National Ride2School Day.

It was wonderful to see so many Sunraysia schools participate in National Ride2School Day this year.

We had the pleasure of visiting St Paul’s Primary School at recess on the day, and it was amazing to see so many children take the opportunity to ride or scoot to school!

Active Travel Incentive for Schools

In Term 1 of 2022, Sunraysia Community Health Services, gave local schools the opportunity to apply for funding to upgrade their bike and scooter racks. This funding opportunity was our response to the feedback we gained from children and young people during Walk to School month last year. The feedback indicated that a lack of safe storage for bikes and scooters at school was a potential barrier to active travel.

Nine local schools made successful applications and we were amazed by the quality of submissions that students made on behalf of their school. Congratulations to Mildura Senior College, The Lake PS, Red Cliffs East PS, Nichols Point PS, Koorlong PS, Henderson College, Ranfurly PS, St Pauls PS and Irymple SC who all made successful applications.

Active Travel Poster Competition

SCHS are excited to announce an ‘Active Travel Poster Competition’.

We are wanting kids to challenge their creative minds and create a poster that promotes the benefits of active travel to and from school.

Three winning designs will be selected and each will receive a $100 Officeworks voucher. The three designs will then be used to promote walk to school month in October.

Walk Safely to School Day 2022

Now in its 23rd year, National Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD) is an annual event when all Primary School children are encouraged to walk and commute safely to school. This year Walk Safely to School Day is being held Friday 20th May. It is a Community Event seeking to promote Road Safety, Health, Public Transport and the Environment.

Get your school involved by visiting the website:

https://www.walk.com.au/WSTSD/

If you’re planning an event for Friday 20th May, we would love to hear from you!

Walk to School Month

Walk to School Month is held in October each year. Throughout the month of October Victorian kids are encouraged to walk, ride, scoot or skate to school. During October local schools battle it out to have the highest percentage of students actively travelling to school. The winning school receives the prestigious ‘Golden Sneaker Trophy’. In 2021 the winning school was Mildura West Primary School.

2021 Walk to School Month Competition

In 2021 Walk to School Month was held in November. SCHS ran a competition accessible to all school aged students in the Mildura region. To enter, students had to answer some survey questions about their active travel experience. We were so pleased to receive over 50 entries and we received some wonderful feedback from all entrants. Three lucky winners were chosen and they all received a brand new scooter and helmet to support them with more active travel to school in the future. All entries were lucky enough to get a Family Pool Pass courtesy of Mildura Waves

The lucky winners were:

  1. Caleb (Mildura PS)
  2. Thomas Markadonatos (Mildura Specialist School)
  3. Karneshia de Been (Ranfurly PS)
