Celebrating Our Local Carers

Sunraysia Community Health Services (SCHS) proudly hosted a special Carers Lunch this week to celebrate and recognise the incredible contribution of local carers in our community. 

Held at the Mildura RSL, the event brought together carers involved in the Victorian Support for Carers Program — a relaxed and meaningful afternoon filled with conversation, connection, and appreciation. Guests enjoyed a presentation from Kim Porter of Carer Gateway, as well as a little well-deserved pampering with massages provided by the team from Broneo 1. 

Supporting those who give so much Funded by the Victorian Government Department of Families, Fairness and Housing, the Support for Carers Program has been operating since July 2022, providing tailored assistance to carers across Victoria. The program helps increase access to flexible services that meet each carer’s individual needs — whether that’s practical help around the home, counselling, support groups, or financial relief during challenging times. 

Yvonne Dingle, SCHS Support for Carers Coordinator, said the lunch was a simple but powerful way to give back to people who dedicate so much of themselves to others. “Our carers often put their own wellbeing last,” Yvonne said. “They’re balancing so many responsibilities — managing medical appointments, providing around-the-clock care — often without a break. Today was about saying thank you and reminding them that their role is deeply valued.” Yvonne explained that sometimes, the smallest acts of support can make the biggest difference. “Whether it’s connecting a carer with counselling, organising respite, or helping them access a fuel voucher to get to appointments, it all helps ease the load.” Strengthening families and communities 

The Victorian Support for Carers Program ensures that carers have someone to turn to when life feels overwhelming. In regional communities like Mildura, where services can be harder to access, the program plays a vital role in helping carers feel seen, supported, and connected. “Without this program, many carers would continue to struggle quietly,” Yvonne said. “When we support carers, we support families — and ultimately, the whole community.” The Support for Carers Program will continue to operate until June 2026, and SCHS hopes to see ongoing funding secured to ensure carers can continue to access this vital service well into the future.
