Active Schools

Health Promotion officers work with Primary and Secondary Schools, to promote active living and build a school environment that supports being less sedentary.

Active Schools

Why active schools?

Children love to be active! Children who are physically active enjoy healthier, happier and more socially connected lives than children who lead less active lives. When active habits are built throughout childhood, our kids are more likely to grow up to be active adults and have health benefits across their lives.

Health promoting schools encourage being active as part of their school culture and have activity friendly environments. A school that values and supports students to be active, makes it easier for kids to get their recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity.

The Health Promotion team at Sunraysia Community Health are the region's leaders in supporting schools to do a 'Physical Activity and Movement' evaluation of their school. With the support of the Healthy Schools Achievement Program framework, endorsed by the Victorian State Government and Cancer Council Australia, you'll be joining over 1,000 Victorian workplaces, 700 schools and 1,400 early childhood services who have already signed up to improve the health and wellbeing of their setting.

We work with school wellbeing teams, health and physical education coordinators and school leaders, to assist schools to achieve healthy and active cultures. The initial evaluation, as well as ongoing support from our team to achieve actions, is free for schools who complete the Achievement Program registration here

Active to School

Encourages Victorian school aged students to walk, ride or scoot to and from school. It’s a great way to help students learn healthy habits and achieve the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity, every day. Along with the health benefits, it’s also a great way to make friends, improve fitness, and build confidence. Active travel options to and from school reduce traffic congestion, save on parking, and reduce our impact on the environment.

Before School Walking Groups

Using Active Travel to and from school around the busy routine of a workday, can be an obstacle for a lot of families. Not to mention the hot weather! Before School Walking Groups are a fantastic way to overcome the perceived inconvenience of active travel to school, and are a great way to help students to be prepared for their day.

Check out our factsheet for implementing a Before School Walking Group here (coming soon)
