A Step Towards Healing: Reflecting on the "She Is Not Your Rehab" Talk

SCHS | November 28th 2024

Last week, our team had the privilege of attending an enlightening event at the Powerhouse: the “Voice for Change” talk by Matt and Sarah Brown, founders of the global anti-violence movement, She Is Not Your Rehab. This movement emerged from a barbershop and aims to confront and dismantle the cycles of intergenerational trauma, violence, and abuse. Its mission is to promote safe relationships while providing essential support to individuals and communities.

The event was not just a talk; it was a powerful sharing of personal stories that resonated deeply with all attendees. Matt and Sarah opened up about their experiences with intergenerational trauma and childhood adversity. They articulated the heavy burdens they’ve carried and the moment they decided to rewrite their family’s narrative. Their journey is one of healing, compassion, and empathy—a reminder that change is possible when we confront our past and take steps toward a better future.

One of the most impactful aspects of their message was the importance of creating safe spaces for men to acknowledge their traumas. Often, societal norms discourage emotional vulnerability, leading many to suppress their feelings and, in turn, perpetuate cycles of harm. Matt and Sarah emphasized how vital it is for men to take responsibility for their healing, not only for their own well-being but also to prevent the transmission of trauma to others. This commitment to understanding and addressing their pain is a crucial step in breaking the cycle of violence.

The Brown’s initiative exemplifies how grassroots movements can effect real change. Their work is a testament to the power of community and the impact of collective healing. By fostering conversations around trauma and creating supportive environments, they are paving the way for healthier relationships and stronger communities.

As we left the event, we felt a renewed sense of hope and inspiration. The stories shared by Matt and Sarah serve as a reminder that healing is not just an individual journey; it’s a communal effort. Together, we can create a world where safe relationships are the norm, and where past traumas do not dictate future behaviours.
