Healthy Canteens and Food
Health Promotion officers work with Primary and Secondary Schools, to promote active living and build a school environment that supports being less sedentary.
Healthy Canteens and Food
Health promoting schools encourage eating well as part of their school culture and have staff and environments that support healthy behaviours.
A school that values and supports staff, students and families to learn about good food habits, makes it easier for parents and children to make healthy food choices into the future.
The Health Promotion team at Sunraysia Community Health are the region's leaders in supporting schools to do a 'Healthy Eating & Oral Health' evaluation of their school. With the support of the Healthy Schools Achievement Program framework, endorsed by the Victorian State Government and Cancer Council Australia, you'll be joining over 1,000 Victorian workplaces, 700 schools and 1,400 early childhood services who have already signed up to improve the health and wellbeing of their setting.
We work with school wellbeing teams, health and physical education coordinators and school leaders, to assist schools to implement achievable and long-lasting actions in creating a school that actively promotes healthy eating.
The initial evaluation, as well as ongoing support from our team to achieve actions, is free for schools who complete the Achievement Program registration here
Does your school canteen comply with the Victorian Government’s Canteens, Healthy Eating and Other Food Services policy?
The Health Promotion team can assist canteen managers in completing a canteen menu assessment, using FoodChecker.
Whether your school has a canteen, external food service provider or occasional lunch orders, you can assess a whole menu, or assess individual products and recipes.
You can use FoodChecker to:
- assess your current menu against the policy to get recommendations for healthy changes
- plan a menu that meets the policy (ie, more than 50% of items are from the Everyday category, and there’s no Occasionally items, or confectionery and high sugar content soft drinks).
- assess individual recipes
- classify individual products
- find healthier Everyday, Select Carefully products
You will receive an instant report with feedback on the food and drinks you supply, as well as recommendations for healthier changes to meet the requirements of the policy.
Before you start:
You will need:
- a recipe for every food and drink item made on site, with exact quantities for each ingredient (e.g. grams, kilograms, litres).
- the name and nutrition information for all packaged and pre-made items.
The healthy Eating Advisory Services also has healthy recipe ideas for when you are planning a school canteen menu.
