Mildura Regional Schools Breakfast Partnership

Providing an opportunity for every child in our region to have a nutritious start to the day!

Mildura Regional Schools Breakfast Partnership

Our aim is to provide children in our region with a nutritious start to the school day and create healthy eating habits from an early age, by providing breakfast at no cost to local children or their family. The breakfast program assists with reducing food insecurity by working to provide all local children with an equal opportunity to excel academically, emotionally, and socially in both schools and kinders.

Research shows a child's ability to concentrate in class, self-regulate and learn is negatively impacted if they are hungry. It has been reported that the rising cost of living makes it increasingly difficult, particularly for low-income families and families experiencing disadvantage, to provide enough healthy food for the family each week.

The Mildura Regional Schools Breakfast Partnership (MRSBP) commenced in 2013 with 8 schools registering in response to a growing awareness that students were frequently going to school without eating breakfast. The Partnership has grown over the last 11 years to include 22 active settings. The partnership adopted a coordinated and collaborative approach to breakfast programs in the region, in which schools share from a central pool of funds as well as support each other by sharing information ideas and insights into getting the most out of the program. This approach ensures that all education settings have the same opportunity to host a breakfast program, eliminates competition between schools for funds, provides practical locally relevant advice, and encourages whole of community support for the partnership.

The partnership is designed works to seek funding and donations to relieve the burden on school budgets by providing each education setting equal opportunities to host a breakfast program. Kinders are able to talk to their governing bodies about funding streams that can be accessed for the provision of the program.

In 2017 the MRSBP established a governance group. The group is comprised of SCHS Health Promotion Officers, along with the representatives from various member schools. The aim is to have equal representation across both private and state schools, Secondary and Primary.

If your school or kinder would like to get involved or sponsor the program, please contact the Health Promotion team at hp@schs.com.au or call 5022 5444.
